EATING OUT

Eating out as a vegan is getting easier. There are now more and more places catering for vegans, ( some places will cater for vegans if you speak to them in advance). There are also some fantastic vegetarian & vegan cafes and restaurants, as well as take away food suitable for vegans.

There are vegan alternatives to pretty much all foods these days, so you don’t have to miss out on your old favourites if you go vegan, you can just choose cruelty free alternatives.

Vitalite and pure spreads are great alternatives to margarine.
There are lots of vegan cheeses available from Tofutti, Redwoods, Sheese and many more.  There are also lots of vegan cream cheeses available.
Alpro do great vegan yogurts, most supermarkets also do their own brand soya yogurts.
There are lots of alternatives to cows milk, try soya milk, rice milk, coconut milk and hemp milk.
There are also lots of vegan creams available, from pouring cream, whipping cream and cream in a can!
Vegan custard taste so good, try alpro and provamel.

( Remember, The flavour of many vegan alternatives, much as cheese and milk varies from brand to brand, so there should be something to suit all tastes.  )

VEGAN MEAL IDEAS

One of the most often asked questions to vegans is “But what do you eat?” Like our diet is going to be bland and restricted. I always reply “Cruelty free versions of everything you eat, and a whole lot more”. I can honestly say that since i became vegan my diet is healthier, more varied and more tasty. A vegan diet isn’t just lentils, beans and rice, it is so much more. Here are a few meal ideas just to show you how many options are open to you if you choose to live compassionately and go vegan.

BREAKFAST :-

Most cereals are vegan, just watch out for honey and milk bi-products in the ingredients.
Most jam and marmalade is vegan.
There are many yummy vegan nut butters available, not just peanut. There are also vegan chocolate spreads.
You can still have a ‘full english’, but going for the vegan option not only means it is cruelty free, it is healthier too!
Or how about a vegan yogurt and fruit, or make your own fresh fruit salad.

LUNCH :-

There are so many options for lunch. Sandwiches, wraps, salad. ( See below for some of my favourite sandwich and wrap fillings. )
Houmous on warm pitta bread. There are lots of different flavour houmous now available, my favourite is caramalised onion.
Jacket potato and beans.
Vegan soup and crusty bread.
Beans & scrambled tofu on toast.
Vegan hot dogs.
Vegan pate on toast.

EVENING MEAL :-

Check out all the recipes on this site for lots of meal ideas.
Salads, stir fries, pasta dishes, jacket potatos, chilli, curry, burgers, pizza and so much more. The options are endless.

EATING OUT

Thankfully more and more places are now catering for vegans, and if there are no vegan options on the menu many places will happily make up a vegan dish. If you are booking a table in advance it is always a good idea to tell them in advance how many vegans will be dining, and ask if they can cater for them.
Ofcourse, some vegans do not wish to eat out at any places that are not fully vegan, or atleast vegetarian and vegan. Thankfully more and more places like this are popping up all over the country. Check out the map below to see if you have a vegan eatery near you…

  1. “Most cereals are vegan, just watch out for honey and milk bi-products in the ingredients.” Be warned that this is no longer true – many companies – Kelloggs being a good example – are now supplementing with vitamin D from non-vegan sources. Many of Kelloggs cereals are now no longer suitable. They list which ones are on their website.

    • Thank you so much for the info Colette, it is much appreciated. It is so frustrating when vegan products suddenly have their ingredients changed to non vegan. It definitely always pays to double check ingredients xx
